The Power of Feedback: Can Drown or Raise You!

Jaro EducationImagine a situation, in a web designing company. There is a final presentation of the project going on, on which the entire team has been working for more than a month compromising their weekends, just to make it perfect. During presentation the VP said that the colour scheme could have been better. The entire team started to work again on the whole project to change the colour schemes according to the VP’s desires. After few days the VP was astound to know that the casual comment or suggestion was taken so seriously.

A polite comment or a sarcastic statement coming from a senior position can make or ruin the entire hard work. Yes, we are talking about the importance of feedback at workplace. Giving and receiving feedback is extremely important. Sometimes the importance of words is not just marked by the level of position. It is obvious that the comments of a VP or even a manager matters a great deal. That makes it all the more mandatory for the organization to practice healthy and proper feedback to avoid unnecessary hard work.

There are three things with which defines a feedback; personal opinion, strong suggestion and a mandate. An opinion may vary according to beliefs and experiences, this allows the team to follow the track of work on which they have been working. Strong suggestion can be a sort of warning from the senior executive and yet he permits the team to take that risk, this gives the room for practical learning to the employees. Lastly, if the team is keen at initiating a market disaster then the manager stops them right away.

Most the employees are incapable of differentiating between an opinion and a mandate. The effective solution to which can be more specific given by providing proper feedback. This can be segregated in a manner such as a mandate should be always given in a written format such as an e-mail. Rest can go with the verbal form of communication.

It very important to work in an organization that is very clear about giving a feedback. Sometimes, some organizations don’t practice any kind of feedback; ultimately leads to the disappointment and reluctant firing of the employees.
